3-part documentary about one of the best known Serbian monasteries.
THE STUDENICA MONASTERY Not far from the lovely Ibar gorge, reached by road from Kraljevo, stands the Studenica monastery, a foundation of Stefan Nemanja named after the clear, cold stream flowing just below it. Of all the Serbian monasteries, Studenica has always been held In the highest regard as it was raised by Grand Pronce Stefan Nemanja (1171-1196), founder of the Independent state and of the powerful dynasty that was to rule Serbia for a full two centuries. The church of the Virgin Mary was built in the last two decades of the 12th century. All Nemanjas sons participated in the decoration of the church with frescoes in 1209. King Milutin (1282-1321) the greatest church and monastery builder of all the Serbian rulers erected the church of Saints Joahim and Anne in 1314. With the Studenica wail paintings, Serbian art suddenly soared to the heights of the Byzantine civilization. Studenica's treasury now contains only part of its original wealth. Its churches, refectories towers and residential buildings where monks have lived for centuries still serve their original purpose today.
